11th-grade girl Kate Oliver has enjoyed reading and discussing the Iliad and the Odyssey in her Humane Letters class. She says she especially appreciated, “reading about heroes in a time unfamiliar to ours, and discussing the relevance and truth they have for us today. Achilles of the Iliad wrestles with the decision between a meaningless lengthy life and one cut short by pride with a lasting legacy of honor. And Odysseus struggles in his journey home whilst overcoming obstacles which challenge each aspect of his character and leadership. The contrast between the protagonists’ individual struggle is a reflection of the diverse and contrasting nature of man.”
